What Diseases Do Kitten Vaccinations Protect Against?

Even if you keep a close eye on your kitten, guaranteeing their protection from disease is nearly impossible. Many threats that can compromise your pet’s health are nearly undetectable. By the time you notice something wrong, the infection may have already spread inside your pet’s body. Completing your kitten’s vaccinations can prevent that potential outcome. Start by scheduling the core vaccinations with your Fort Wayne veterinarian. Core vaccinations are considered essential for all cats and must be administered no matter where you and your pet live.

The core vaccinations for cats protect against rabies, feline calicivirus, feline distemper, and feline herpesvirus type I. Vaccines for feline calicivirus, feline distemper, and feline herpesvirus type I are combined in one injection known as the FVRCP shot. The rabies vaccine is administered via a separate injection.

While only the FVRCP and rabies vaccines are recommended for all kittens, the veterinarian may suggest other injections during your visit to the local animal hospital. These additional injections are known as non-core vaccines and are suggested based on an animal’s lifestyle or environment. Discuss the non-core vaccines with your vet to determine if they are necessary.

When Should Kittens Be Vaccinated?

If you are caring for a pet for the first time, you may be surprised to learn that they should be vaccinated early. Generally speaking, the first round of vaccinations should be administered when a kitten is around six weeks old. Vaccinating this early is important because kittens don’t have mature immune systems to combat infections.

The FVRCP vaccine is administered first. You must return to the animal hospital when your kitten is around 14 weeks old to get the rabies shot. Note that both core vaccinations must also be administered multiple times.
